A former Fianna Fáil TD has admitted to providing a character reference to sex offender Daniel Ramamoorthy.

Reports of an elected representative supplying the reference came to light last week.

Former Fianna Fáil TD Jim Glennon has confirmed he was the politician who provided a character reference for convicted sex offender Daniel Ramamoorthy.

He was a former government IT adviser, and was found guilty of sexually exploiting a teenage boy he met at a children’s camp and also pleaded guilty to possessing child abuse material.

In a statement today, Glennon described the crimes as “vile” and said writing the letter was a serious error of judgement, adding that he is deeply sorry for any additional distress caused.

He says he will resign from all professional roles and plans to apologise directly to the victim’s family, through the Courts Service.
