A poignant ‘Blessing of the Boats’ ceremony took place recently in Dunmore East with a wreath also laid in Waterford Harbour as part of the event.
The ceremony attracted a large crowd of onlookers and the event involved the laying of the wreath in honour of the many people who lost their lives at sea over the years.

In an online post Dunmore East RNLI thanked everyone who attended the event, while pointing out the ceremony was the first one to be held in a number of years.

“There was a great attendance for the flotilla,” said a spokesperson for the organisation, who also noted that among those present were local sailors, fishermen and members of local search and rescue services.

The Rescue 117, Coast Guard helicopter also made a fly-by for the event. Gratitude was expressed to those who helped organise the ceremony and to those who donated throughout the day.

The voluntary donations help the organisation carry out its 24/7 search and rescue services from Dunmore East.
