Portlaw Camogie

Exciting news for our club's own Abbie Burrows.

She has been named No.7, wing back, on the Minor Team of the Year. This honor is well-deserved, as Abbie consistently gives her all on the field for both club and county.

She's continuing her grandmother's legacy. Congratulations, Abbie, We're extremely proud of you, as well as Katelyn (Brickey's) and Maggie (De La Salle) for their fantastic achievements.

Club Gear: Due to numerous requests from members after seeing our new Portlaw Camogie club gear, we have an online shop for the club with Balon for three weeks. Well done to our U12’s who started off their U12 campaign with a great win against De Le Salle. Well done girls.

Scholarships

Two scholarships have once again been provided by the Brophy family for two young Portlaw GAA Club members to enjoy and learn the beauty of the Irish language and all the cultures and traditions that go along with staying in Colaiste na Rinne.

The scholarships were generously donated in memory of Martin (Monnie) Brophy. Monnie was born and raised in Portlaw, Waterford. Monnie, alongside his brothers and sisters, called Brown St. in Portlaw their home. Together, they grew up in this tight knit community and made friendships that would last a lifetime.

Portlaw GAA played an important part in Monnie’s youth. He cherished the memories and friendships he developed over the years. Throughout each chapter of his life, Monnie always carried great pride and love for Portlaw. His passion for Waterford hurling remained steadfast throughout his life. When reflecting on fond memories, Monnie always shared his great experiences at An Rinn.

Rinn offered Monnie the opportunity to be among like-minded people while simultaneously encouraging his curiosity in new ideas and mind sets. Rinn served as a foundation for Monnie’s future successes. He would be honored to see two young Portlaw GAA members go to An Rinn in his name. The deadline for applications is June 21. Official Opening

Well what can we say only, 'what a day' we had for the grand opening of our clubhouse and gym facilities.

The day was filled with laughs, chats and many many stories and we hope that everyone enjoyed themselves. We can’t thank enough, everybody who made the day run so smoothly including everyone who baked buns, cakes and made sandwiches for the occasion and gave their time to serve them it was very much appreciated.

Tom Russell for his top class sound equipment, Walter, Mowler, Tom Hartley and all the committee who helped have the place presented and decorated for the day. Our MC for the day, Gavin Whelan, photographer Noel Browne, our special guests, Eastern County Board Chairman Michael O’Brien, Waterford County Board Chairman, Sean Michael O’Regan and Munster Council Chairman, Ger Ryan.

It was fantastic to have one of the club presidents, former field director for over 50 years, Seamus Crotty, with us to assist in officially opening the new clubhouse and we were delighted to present our own John Galvin with an award to celebrate 50 years since Waterfords first All Star.

We also want to thank juvenile teams from Na Gael and St. Mary's for coming down to us, Mooncoin camogie team and the Brickey Rangers Intermediate Hurlers. It was definitely a day to remember and one that will go down in club history.

Portlaw Utd

It was a disappointing end to what was a brilliant first season back in the Premier League for Portlaw Utd when lost 4-0 to Tramore in the Premier Cup Semi-Final.

We started really well and had three great chances to take the lead but couldn’t find the net. After that, four quick goals by Tramore before half time ended the game as a contest. However, in the second half our lads didn’t give up and again created some great chances but again just a night we didn’t convert any of them. We wish Tramore all the best in the final.

It was fantastic for our club to see 15-year-old, Sam Croke, make his Premier debut in Ozier Park. The first of many for sure.

As a club we’d like to put on record our thanks to Michael Donnelly who has given so much to the club over the past two years, along with Mark, Nathan and Locky; to have us competing at the top tier is brilliant for a club our size. Our players have been fantastic this season and everything we have asked of them they have delivered and we thank them for representing our club so well over the season.

Finally to all our sponsors and supporters throughout the season we thank you, easily the best supported club in the league this season and hopefully already looking forward to next season.
