Local Notes: Sympathies, hurling news and beat the billy goat

Lots of events are taking place in Passage East
The death occurred of Kathleen Cleere, Hillside Drive, Crooke, Passage East, Waterford and formerly Parade Square and Blynd Quay, Passage East, who died February 4, aged 80, in the care of the wonderful staff in The Oak Ward, South East Palliative Care. Kathleen spent many years living in Birmingham where she worked as a Supervisor in Lucas’s Factory before she moved back home to Passage where she worked for many families, including Mrs Mona Lynch, Rachel Lehane, Mailo and Henry Molloy and Margaret Hearne Farrell, all of whom have very fond memories of Kathleen as an employee and a dear friend. She was responsible for setting up the local bingo group several years ago in the community centre in Passage, with the late George and Maura Flynn. Kathleen was still very much in control at the last bingo session before Christmas and will be missed by all her bingo pals. She made a few trips to Lourdes in recent years with St Paul's Group, which she enjoyed and always brought back little holy gifts to her friends and anyone who had children making First Communion or Confirmation. A trip was organised in the village a few years ago to go to New York and Kathleen was among the group to go and see the sights, she loved it all. Kathleen was a regular at mass on Sundays and had her usual spot in the church. She became unwell in 2017 and spent some time in St James’s Hospital, Dublin and was doing very well. She became unwell again recently and after a short stay in UHW she passed away peacefully. Kathleen was reposing in Tom Hennessey’s Funeral Home on Thursday, February 6, where a large number of neighbours and friends attended the prayers, said by Rev PJ Breen PP. Later Rev Brian Power who knew Kathleen from his time in the parish, paid his respects. She was laid to rest in Crooke Cemetery on Friday morning where again a large crowd attended the burial service. Kathleen was predeceased by her father John, mother Teresa (Tessie) and her sister-in-law Maura. She is survived by her brothers John (Sam) and James (Fungie). Her sister-in-law Elizabeth, niece Caroline, nephews Brian and Jason, grandnieces Maja, Leah, Emily and Holly, her extended family, neighbours and and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

Passage Seniors are in Group A in the Hurling League this year, which has six teams, including Mt Sion, Dungarvan, Ferrybank, Lismore and Fourmilewater. In Rd 1 Passage meet Mt Sion, Rd 2 v Fourmilewater, Rd 3 v Lismore , in Rd 4 v Dungarvan and in Rd 5 v Ferrybank. At this early stage all senior players please note, be around for the Championship this year, no holidays please. On Sunday week last, in Carlow, Waterford senior hurlers suffered their first ever defeat to Carlow in Division 1(B) of the National Hurling League. The Waterford team was captained by our own Mark Fitzgerald and we congratulate Mark on the honour. It must however be pointed out that Waterford were playing with around seven or eight of what you could call first team players; the others out due to injury so new Manager, Peter Queally had very few options in his selection. We wish him well in future games in the Division 1 (B), which he inherited from last year's manager, and that all the players will be back soon.
