Local Notes: Swim to beat the ferryman, GAA news and mass times

The Beat the Ferryman initiative will take place in Passage East
The death took place on April 28, Mrs Elizabeth (Liz) Kavanagh (née: Doherty), The Mount, Cheekpoint. Liz, who was in her 96th years, passed away at University Hospital Waterford. Her remains reposed in Tom Hennessey’s Funeral Home, Johnstown, Waterford, on Tuesday last. Her Funeral cortege drove through Cheekpoint and passed The Mount, before arriving at St. Nicholas’ Church on Wednesday morning last for her Requiem Mass, celebrated by Rev Fr PJ Breen PP. At the Mass, her son Dermott placed St Anthony Lilies on her coffin as a symbol of her devotion to St Anthony. First and second readings were by her niece Jacqui, and Kevin, her son. Prayers of the Faithful were read by her grandsons and hymns were sung by Hazel Tebay. Liz was laid to rest in Faithlegg Cemetery after mass.
She is predeceased by her sisters and brothers Jim, Brigid, Eileen, Matt and Andy, and her daughter-in-law, Jeanette. She is survived by her family Kevin, June, Eileen and Dermot, sister-in-law Rita, grandchildren Clare, James, Liam, Lauren, Paul Niall, Adam and Rory, great-grandchildren Thomas and Cillian, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends. Masses in Crooke and Faithlegg Churches will take place on Wednesday, May 8 (Faithlegg at 11.30am; Thursday, May 9 (Crooke at 10am); Saturday, May 11 (Faithlegg 6.30pm); (Sunday Vigil), May 12 (Crooke at 11.30am).
Well done to Rory Jacob who was on the Waterford minor team, at midfield, that beat Limerick away. Their first win in the Munster Championship, while Thomas Carey was on the U20 panel, that played Clare away last Saturday. Passage Hurling Club is delighted to join forces with Park Rangers AFC, for the Darkness into Light Walk 2024. Leaving Passage Hurling Club at 4.15am, on Saturday, May 11, and finishing in Park Rangers, with tea and treats. All are welcome to come and support such a good cause.
Fixtures coming up as follows for the club are Thursday, May 9, All County Minor League Clonea v Passage, in Clonea at 7pm. On Saturday, May 11, the All County League Division 1 will see Passage East take on De La Salle, in Passage at 6pm. On Sunday, May 12, in the All County Division 8 group, Passage East will take on Fenor, in Passage at 12 noon.
On Thursday, May 16, the All County Minor Hurling League will see Passage up against Erins Own/Sacred Heart, in Passage at 7pm while on May 17, in an All County Division 1 fixture, Ballygunner will provide the opposition for Passage East, in Ballygunner with the throw-in at 7pm. Please check locally on the day in case of change of date or time, as currently there are problems with draining the pitch in Passage.
The annual Beat the Ferryman Challenge Deep Water Swim, from Ballyhack to Passage East will take place on Sunday, June 16. This year there will be two major changes. Entries will be taken on the day, either in Passage East or Ballyhack, and online entries will close on Saturday, June 15, at 1pm.
The race briefing in Ballyhack will take place on the Quay before swimmers enter the water.
Schools Hurling
Heartiest congratulations to the Passage National School's U11 hurlers, who qualified for the Cumann na mBunscol hurling final after a cracking blitz in St Saviours on Wednesday last. The final will take place on Thursday, May 23, in Passage, versus Gaelscoil Philib Barùn, Tramore.
In camogie news, the Waterford Senior Ladies Camogie team beat Limerick recently in the Munster Championship by 12 points to 6, and qualified to meet Tipperary in the Munster semi-final. Kate Lynch, Parkswood, came on as a sub in the second half. On Saturday week the Waterford Camogie team lost out to Tipperary, in Kilkenny, in the All Ireland final by 2-9 to 10 points.
Emma Fitzgerald, Crooke was on the team and Hannah Hutchinson was a selector.
Great to see Jack O'Donoghue, Woodstown, back on the Munster team again after a long injury. Recently Munster had a fine win over The Lions in Johannesburg and Jack scored a try.
On Tuesday next, May 14, at the RSC, at 10am, the Waterford Primary Schools Track meeting, promoted by Ferrybank AC, goes ahead and Passage and Faithlegg National Schools will have boys and girls competing. Sprints and distance events and relays for each class from First to Sixth.
