Ferrybank local notes on walking groups, clothes drives, bereavements and more
It is with regret we record the sad passing of 72-year-old Brendan Cummins, late of Landscape, Passage Road, and formerly of Rockenham, Ferrybank, who died on Saturday March 16. Brendan was predeceased by his first wife Terry (née Griffin), his parents Joseph (former mayor of Waterford) and Nell (Ellen) Cummins who passed away in June 2022 in her 100th year. Brendan will be sadly missed by his heartbroken wife Joan (née Dalton), his stepsons Sasha, Nicholas and Daniel, brothers Jim and Joseph, sisters Lily (Moody) and Maureen (Bolger), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours, and many friends. A well liked and successful businessman, Brendan touched the lives of many with his wit and humour and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Brendan's cremation took place privately, and Brendan's remembrance service will take place later.
Progress on the South-East Greenway, connecting Glenmore, Slieverue, and Inistioge (Woodstock), is advancing steadily, with ongoing work in Kilkenny. Recently, Lot 5A, spanning approximately 5.5km from Ferrybank to Curraghmore, saw the installation of a screening layer. Works are on schedule, aiming for completion by the end of 2024. The tender for technical consultancy services for remaining phases has been rerun using the TII framework, with tenders due by March-end and consultant appointment expected in May. Legal contracts for land acquisition from CIE along the abandoned rail corridor are finalized. A Charter for Accommodation Works has been agreed upon by local authorities to ensure consistency in landowner accommodations. A funding application under the RRDF includes plans for a Cycle Loop via the Pink Rock and along the River Barrow. Feasibility studies for the Slieverue link are finished, with consultations ongoing. Once completed, the 24km greenway will offer a scenic off-road trail through South Kilkenny, with a 6km section from New Ross to Glenmore already open to the public.
Ferrybank GAA club are continuing to accept clothes for recycling, in an on-going effort to raise funds for the club. This is an ideal way to clear out your winter wardrobe and get ready for the spring/summer days ahead. Clothes can be left at the car park in the Ferrybank GAA grounds in Abbeylands between 10am and 11am every Saturday and Sunday morning.
Slieverue Active Retirement Association finished up for their Easter break, last week. They had a very interesting and informative talk on Nutrition and Health by Martina Avery, a yoga teacher, nutrition therapist & lifestyle coach & owner of inside out wellness. Martina has been practising yoga for over 20 years and it has been life-changing for her. It has made her aware of her body not just physically but emotionally and mentally too. She always had an interest in nutrition and was brought up eating healthy whole foods. Thanks to Martina and thanks to Susan and Greg for the lovely food. Everyone really enjoyed the day. The club will return on Wednesday 10th April at 11.30am for Yoga followed by our monthly meeting.
To facilitate works on the North Quays Public Infrastructure Project, the Bring Bank at Ferrybank (Bus Shelter at Dock Road / Rockshire Road Junction) has been removed. The Aldi Car Park is the nearest location to for cloths recycling or for cans and glass recycling. Unfortunately, the removal for the newspaper and magazine bins have been taken away and now there is no location in Ferrybank for the recycling of such waste. Also, Uisce Éireann, is carrying out essential works on the water network at Marymount/Fountain Street, Ferrybank. There will be no access from Fountain Street to Marymount for 2 and half weeks from Monday 25th March to Wednesday 10th April. The Lodges Development is taking shape and are nearing the final fixing stages now. There is not date yet, as to when they will be occupied.
The Ferrybank Healthy Club Walking Group meets every Thursday evening at 7pm at the Ferrybank GAA Club Grounds, (X91 AK390) leaving at 7.10. All welcome but remember to wear a high vis.
On Tuesday March 19, Edith (Edie) O'Dea, née McGuire, Rockenham, passed away peacefully, at home, aged 88 years. Edie was predeceased by her husband Patrick (Buddy) of Ferrybank Scouts who died in 1978, son Anthony, brothers Paddy, (McGuire’s Garden Centre) Tommy, Tony and Jimmy, sisters Joan (Russell) and Patty (Fenton).
She will be sadly missed by her daughter Geraldine (Morrissey), sons Richard, Jim and Colm, daughter-in-law Claire, grandchildren Michelle, Christopher, Shane, Emer, Tonya, Louise, Alison, Anthony and Ryan, great grandchildren Amelia, Stephen, Dylan, Harry and Cillian, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours, and friends.
