Local Notes: Plaques, rescues, retirement and play groups

Tramore
On Whit Sunday, Tramore RNLI responded to a report of a person in difficulty in a small inflatable dinghy near the Ladies Slip at Tramore beach.
Within five minutes, the RNLI lifeboat, manned by volunteers Dave O’Hanlon (helm), Ronan McConnell, and Conor McCarthy, was launched. They located the individual just two minutes later, about 300 meters from the initial reported location.
The crew safely brought the person onboard and returned to Tramore pier, from where they had set out two hours earlier. After assessing the individual at the lifeboat station, it was determined that they were fatigued and cold but uninjured.
Helm, Dave O’Hanlon noted that a sudden change in wind conditions had caught the person off guard and emphasized the importance of checking the weather forecast and local conditions.
He also praised the member of the public who called 999 to report the incident. Mr O’Hanlon expressed gratitude to both the sea-going and shore-based volunteer crew for their quick response to the emergency.
After 15 years as bar and social manager of Tramore GAA Centre, Charlie Ryan retires from the position. Under his stewardship the club has seen many great nights and events, and Charlie was a firm supporter of the Tramore Community Market from the outset.
It was always Charlie’s dream to run a bar and after several years in Bausch & Lomb and Murphy’s Pub in Cloghernagh, he took the opportunity to run the Tramore GAA Centre.
Despite been a Wexford man, Charlie had a fondness for the Deise and hopefully he can enjoy his retirement.

There was great shock and sadness throughout Tramore following the news of the passing of Larry Flavin, late of Tivoli Terrace, Tramore, Co. Waterford, and formerly of Carrigavantry, Tramore, at his home on Tuesday, May 28.
Larry will be sadly missed by his loving children Kevin, Clara and Sharna, his adoring grandchildren Cillian and Eva, his sisters and brothers Frances, Mary, Margaret, John, Phil, Pat, Thomas, James, Eddie and all their wives and partners, all his nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews and his daughter-in-law Ana.
Lar will be forever missed by all his relatives, extended family, wonderful neighbours, and many friends.
Lar and the Flavin family have made such an amazing contribution to our Micheál MacCraith GAA Club, over many decades, and it’s great to report that the Flavin Clan are still carrying on with this great tradition.
It was their late parents, Johnny, and Peggy, who instilled a love of Gaelic Games to their family. Some of Lar’s brothers, especially John, Phil and Thomas were fantastic dual players during their careers. Lar was an outstanding painter and decorator in his beloved Tramore and was easily recognisable by his white work-van, DECOR 8, and he always took great pride in his work.
Larry reposed at Falconer's Funeral Home, Riverstown, on Friday, May 31, with Requiem Mass on Saturday morning at The Church of the Holy Cross, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Immediately after Larry was laid to rest in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
A celebration of Waterford’s coastal heritage was recently marked by unveiling a beautifully engraved limestone plaque at Kilfarrasy Cove. This event was part of the Bealtaine Living Earth Festival, celebrating its 20th year.
The plaque, featuring sea birds and a poem inspired by poet Mark Roper and author-photographer Paddy Dwan, highlights Waterford’s natural beauty.
Roper and Dwan’s collaboration, including their book 'Sea and Stone', inspired the project with the Copper Coast Geopark. Michal Damaszke, the master craftsman, engraved the plaque now displayed at Kilfarrasy, the eastern end of Ireland’s first UNESCO Global Geopark.
This simple yet profound tribute to Waterford’s heritage will be admired by all visitors to Kilfarrasy Cove this summer.
On Thursday, May 30, Christine Dempsey, (nee: White), late of Beachmount Drive, Tramore, formerly of Yorkshire, England, passed away peacefully. She will be greatly missed by all her extended family, relatives, wonderful neighbours, and many friends. She was laid to rest in St. Declan’s Cemetery, following Requiem Mass at the The Church of the Holy Cross, Tramore, on Sunday.
Well done to learners from Tramore Further Education and Training Centre Creative Writing Group, who recently launched their latest collection of short stories and poetry in the Coastguard Centre, Tramore.
To give us a taste of the collection, everyone read a piece they had written and there was tea and cake afterwards in the beautiful gardens, overlooking Tramore Bay.
Creative Writing courses are an important and valuable aspect of our adult education service. Not only do these courses develop basic skills, but they also nurture our imagination and creativity, help us to process our thoughts and build confidence in how we express ourselves.
Thanks to everyone who attended this event, all who helped out and the Coastguard Centre for providing such an amazing venue. If you would like a copy of 'Joy of Writing', you can pick one up in reception at Tramore FET Centre (X91 W582).
