Ferrybank could see a significant expansion in housing after a planning application was lodged for almost 100 new homes behind the Abbey Gate Retail Park. Abbeygate Properties Ltd has submitted proposals for 98 residential units along with a crèche facility, forming part of the third phase of a larger masterplan for the area.
The development would consist of 44 semi-detached, two-storey houses - including 30 three-bedroom and 14 four-bedroom homes - alongside 54 apartments spread across three separate blocks. Plans also provide for car and bicycle parking to accommodate future residents. The application is currently under consideration, with a decision expected in the coming weeks. Before the financial crash in 2008, there were plans for 600 houses to be built in this area.
Unfortunately, the Ferrybank GAA Club has made the difficult decision to suspend its clothes collection for the foreseeable future. This is due to ongoing challenges in the collection process, driven by a declining market for used clothing and the inability of recycling companies to reliably pick up donations. We sincerely thank everyone who has supported this initiative over the years, and we hope to resume collections when circumstances improve.
Kilkenny County Council has announced that a bulky goods disposal service will be available to households at Granny Recycling Centre this week until Saturday, October 4.
The initiative offers householders the opportunity to safely and affordably dispose of large items that are not suitable for regular waste collection. The cost is just €5 per car, making it an accessible option for families and individuals wishing to declutter or responsibly recycle household furniture.
Items accepted during the drop-off period include lockers, couches, wardrobes, wooden tables, chairs, bed bases, headboards, and wooden TV stands. These bulky goods often prove difficult for residents to transport or recycle through normal waste services, and the Council hopes the scheme will encourage proper disposal while reducing the risk of illegal dumping.
Residents are reminded that only the listed household goods will be accepted and that all other waste types should continue to be disposed of through the usual recycling and waste collection services.
The Council is encouraging people across the county to take advantage of this service during the scheduled week and ensure that unused furniture and household items are given a proper end-of-life destination.
