Albert Burke Memorial Shield

St. Mary’s secured a memorable win in their final league outing against Roanmore recently in what proved to be a fiercely contested match played under testing weather conditions in Roanmore. The first half was a tight affair, with both sides trading scores in the wind and rain. At the break, St. Mary’s held the narrowest of leads, St. Mary’s 0-8, Roanmore 1-4. Despite no let-up in the weather, the intensity remained high throughout the second half. Both teams battled bravely to the final whistle, finishing level on the scoreboard, St. Mary’s 0-13, Roanmore 1-10. With the Albert Burke Memorial Shield on the line, the game was decided by a dramatic penalty shoot-out. St. Mary’s held their nerve, emerging victorious with a 2–0 win on penalties. After the match, players, supporters, and families gathered in the Roanmore Centre, where Roanmore chairman John Ryan warmly welcomed everyone, including members of the Burke and O’Driscoll families. Marie McDonald, Chairperson of Sliabh gCua/St. Mary’s G.A.A. Club expressed her gratitude to Roanmore for their sporting contest and generous hospitality. The evening concluded with Albert’s daughter Emily, presenting the Albert Burke Memorial Shield to Cillian Tobin, captain of St. Mary’s. Thank you to both teams for a fantastic display of hurling, it was a great tribute to Albert, a former player with both teams.
