Portlaw Utd AFC

Our U13’s represented Portlaw in the Terry Butler Trophy recently with their second game in less than 24 hours. They got off to a good start pressing back the Ballyduff defence with Colm Nugent putting Portlaw ahead after 8 minutes with a strike into the roof of the net, from a Ryan Power pass. Ballyduff equalised two minutes later after a run through the Portlaw defence and slotted past Brian Grant. The woodwork then saved Ballyduff from an Evan Kiely shot after latching onto a through ball from Darragh O’Connor. Portlaw continued to press for the remainder of the half. Brian Grant saving bravely to prevent Ballyduff taking the lead after a through ball. The second half saw Portlaw again on the front foot with Evan Kiely firing a low shot into the bottom corner from a Tommy Dunphy pass after six minutes. Ballyduff equalised again a few minutes later with a strike from the edge of the box. Portlaw continued to create chances with Ballyduff’s goalkeeper forced to make numerous saves. Ballyduff were then awarded a penalty for handball which they scored to go 3-2 ahead against the run of play. Portlaw pressed again and again but failed to convert. The game ended with Ballyduff winning but Portlaw much the better team, confirmed by their goalkeeper winning the man of the match award. Congratulations to Ballyduff on this occasion and we look forward to meeting them again sometime.

Premier League Result: Portlaw 3-3 Dungarvan Team Sponsor: The Clodagh Bar. After a tough Cup game between the two sides a couple of weeks ago, Dungarvan were the visitors to the paddock again this morning in a game that didn’t disappoint. We took the lead early after good work down the right from Conor McHugh set up Samuel Deevy to tap home at the back post. Dungarvan came into the game and scored twice before the break to leave the score 2-1 at half time. Dungarvan went 3-1 up early in the 2nd half and things didn’t look good but as ever our lads never gave up. A brilliant strike outside the box from John Power got us back to 3-2, before Jordi got us level on 80 minutes. We had a couple of chances to win it late on but a draw probably a fair result on the balance of play. This result leaves us 3rd in the league with two games to play, which represents a fantastic season for the lads. Next up we’re away to Ballinroad in the Munster Cup with the winner advancing to the open draw.

Munster Youths Cup Result: Portlaw 2-3 Bohs. Team Sponsor: Pat Kerley Windows & Doors Good game between two even sides. We took the lead when a Conor Foley corner was headed home by Sam Croke. Bohs got back level when we failed to deal with a corner. We had a couple of big chances before half time with Sam Croke coming closest when he hit the post. Two quick goals midway through the 2nd half for Bohs looked to have sealed the game but our lads kept working and we got our reward when Sam Croke smashed home his 2nd with five minutes to play. We really pushed on for the last few minutes with our last chance falling to Sam Croke but his effort just cleared the bar. Disappointment for the boys but overall a good performance against strong opposition.

U14 League: St. Joseph’s 1 v 2 Portlaw Utd. Special mention to Darragh O’Connor & Sean Maher for assisting goal and scoring. Tough fought win with special mentions for Brian Grant and Connor O’Donoghue. Well done to all involved.

Portlaw United FC Girls

Portlaw 0-1 Kilmacow On the back of a good performance against Piltown last week, Portlaw hosted Kilmacow in the Paddock for their first home game of the season. We started well, as our strikers were testing the Kilmacow keeper from early on. We kept applying pressure throughout the first half with the midfield and defence winning tackles, and moving the ball up the pitch. A player of the match performance from Amelie in goal made sure the game stayed at 0-0 at half time, with some impressive saves. Second half started as the first half ended with Portlaw on top, however, after breaking through the defence, Kilmacow went on to score. The girls didn’t drop their heads and kept going. Maddie Whyte came closest for Portlaw, but we couldn’t get the breakthrough. A huge thanks to Kilmacow for a great game and a massive well done to the girls.

Portlaw Camogie Club

Well done to our talented U12 and U10 girls who took part in the Butlerstown U11 Tournament recently. Our girls battled hard, fought for every ball and never took a backwards step and ended in the shield final. The win just slipped away from them against a strong Ardmore team. We are super proud of our girls, the effort and bravery on display was unreal with girls putting their bodies on the line to try and win.
