Local Notes: Day centre open day, medal presentation and visiting American teams

Portlaw GAA were delighted to host the New York U15 hurling team as they arrived into Ireland in preparation for the Féile na Gael competition
The rain did not stop people from attending the recent open day at the Dr Martin Day Centre.
Many people came to view the facilities and see the wonderful work that many of the organisations who use the day centre on a regular basis. There were beautiful displays of sewing, knitting and produce from the allotment.
The Red Cross were very busy checking blood pressure and bloods and also present were members of the Prayer Group and the Active Retirement group.
A special thanks to Gerry Walsh and friends, Sean and Ned, who provided the music. Since its opening 12 years ago Gerry has been the mainstay, providing music to entertain the residents on a regular basis but also the many other musicians who have also entertained the clients deserve our thanks and appreciation.
Presentations were made to the Corcoran family in memory of their mother who gave so much time and commitment to the centre since its inception and Kate Ryan and Dr Finnegan, on their retirement from the Portlaw Health Centre over a period of 30 years.
Alice Kiersey, Manager, was also acknowledged for her great work in the centre for the past 12 years and Paudie Coffey spoke on behalf of the Dr Martin Centre outlining the many services available in there.
He thanked Lady Waterford for her outstanding service and Alice Kiersey for her fantastic work with the clients while the voluntary workers and workers on the Fas schemes were also thanked.
Among the other people praised and thanked were the kitchen staff, for providing the meals, and the musicians. People who donated spot prizes and all who have contributed to the success of the centre, too many to mention, were also universally praised. Paudie announced that a a grant has been approved for the Centre to get a small minibus for the use of the clients and to deliver meals on wheels.
The Dr Martin Centre is currently looking at extending the residents lounge in the front or the back of the building and Paudie encouraged all to drop in for a cuppa and a chat when passing.
Minister Mary Butler also spoke at the event and outlined the Government's commitment to such care centres for older people and also helping older people stay in their homes. She outlined the grants available to the older generation.
Dr Finnegan and Kate thanked the centre for their kind presentation and the people of Portlaw were also acknowledged for their good wishes on leaving the area.
While looking forward to his retirement, he said he he will miss all the clients who he attended in the surgery or at home and said Portlaw would always hold a special place in his life. Tea and cakes were served to all the people who attended courtesy of the many people who baked and who volunteered in the kitchen. The Dr Martin Centre wishes to thank all the people who attended and who helped to make the day a great success.

Portlaw GAA were delighted to host the New York U15 hurling team as they arrived into Ireland in preparation for the Féile na Gael competition.
The team arrived on Tuesday, June 18, at approximately 5pm, to Portlaw GAA and stayed with us for two days. They trained with our U15 team and enjoy some fun activities together at our field. They headed to Tramore for a fun day before coming back to Portlaw GAA on Wednesday, June 19, where they played games against Portlaw and St Mary's.
We were delighted to present our intermediate hurlers with their Eastern Hurling medals from 2023.
We also had: Club Person of the Year- Squelchy; Intermediate Hurler of the Year - DJ Foran; Young Hurler of the Year - Cormac Rooney; Senior Footballer of the Year - John Power; Young Footballer of the Year - Cian Kiel; Junior Hurler of the Year - Luke Power.
The winning numbers drawn in the Portlaw Combined Lotto results for June 17, were: 1, 5, 6, 14.
There was one winner of this weeks jackpot of €3,200, congratulations to Elaine Whyte. The Lucky Dip winners were composed of: €100 - Claire White; €50 - Breeda Flynn; €40 - Brendan Lyons. Well done all, and thank you to everyone for supporting the lotto to date.
