100th Birthday

A very happy 100th birthday to Mrs Mona Lynch (nee: Coghlan), Knockroe, Passage East, who celebrated her big day on Friday, August 9, in Killure Bridge Nursing Home. She was joined by the Mayor of Waterford City and County,  Cllr Jason Murphy and Mona admired Cllr Murphy's chain. The Mayor presented her with a letter from President Michael D Higgins and of course, with her cheque in it. The Mayor also, on behalf of the City and County Council, presented her with a beautiful scroll.

She was joined by members of her family including her son Brian and his wife Jane. Mona had a fall some time ago and was hospitalised for a few weeks. Wishing her many more years of good health, on behalf of all her friends in her native Woodstown, Knockroe, Passage and Crooke areas and indeed in other areas also.

Gaultier Active Retirement

The Gaultier Active Retirement Group is looking for new members. The first meeting is on Tuesday, September 10, at 2pm in the Passage East Community Centre. For information please contact Mary Foskin on 086 2545045.

Faithlegg School Event

The Minaun Community Theatre Group presents a 90-minute play on the extraordinary life of Mary Somerville Parker Strangman. Born in Carriganore, Waterford, Mary was one of the first female doctors in Ireland and the UK and became Waterford’s first female Councillor, in 1912.

She pioneered work in alcoholism and addiction, championed social reform, women’s rights, and public health, particularly combating tuberculosis. Even after retiring from public office in 1920, she continued to serve as a physician. The admission fee will be €10.

Passage Hurling

The Passage seniors had a fine win over Lismore on Saturday, August 10, in Fraher Field. The final score was Passage 20 points to Lismore's 1-15. It could have been even more with Passage on top for a quite lot of the game. Our goalkeeper and all our six backs were terrific, especially Mark Fitzgerald and Callum O'Neill and up front Thomas Carey, Mikie Cummins and sub, Eoin Connors, were impressive and on a personal note Sean Kelly may be a better option out in the half forwards to suit his style of play. They played Roanmore on Sunday last in Walsh Park in the Qarter final, news next week on this.

The Junior A team were beaten by Mt Sion in the knockout stages on Sunday evening week in St Saviour's. They had a good season with several wins and on Monday week last the Junior C team were beaten by Clonea in their semi-final in Fenor. Again, they had a very good run. The minors continued their fine form with a six point victory over Clonea in Passage, last Wednesday week, and drew with St Patrick's in Kilgobnet on Wednesday last. They are now into the semi final where they play Erin's Own Sacred Heart this evening Tuesday, at 6.30pm in St Savior's grounds.

The U15 team had a fine win over Brickey Rangers in Passage on Monday week last. Fixtures coming up include: U15 v St Patrick's in Kilgobnet at 7pm on Monday, August 26. The club's Summer Camp takes place from Monday, August 19 to Wednesday, August 21.

Congratulations

Congratulations and best wishes to Peter Queally, the new Waterford hurling manager and his back up team. We remember Peter as a major influence on Passage hurling over his term with us, which saw us County Senior Hurling Champions for the only time, in 2013.

Triathlon

At the recent Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon, Emer Larkin from Passage won her age group in the event. Emer was timed at 1:20:20. She had a swim over 750 metres, a cycle over 20 kilometres and a run over 5km.

Cross Country

The Annual Ferrybank AC promoted Primary Schools Cross Country is at the RSC on Tuesday, September 17, at 11am. Short races for classes 1st to 6th class and children from Passage East and Faithlegg schools are expected to participate. An early reminder to all to be prepared.
