Below par Blues crash to another league defeat

Grant Horton and co were left disappointed with another league defeat at the hands of Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds.
Waterford FC crashed to their fifth league defeat in six games when they went down 2-0 against Sligo Rovers in their SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division clash played at the Showgrounds on Saturday evening last.
After going down to both Drogheda United and Derry City in their last two league games, Keith Long’s side were hoping to put a home side that conceded seven in a heavy defeat against the former the week previous, but they failed to have a shot on target.
Goals from Wilson Waweru and a super header from the impressive Simon Power were the difference at the call of time with Blues keeper Louis Jones making two excellent saves and both Darragh Leahy and Kacper Radkowski clearing efforts off the line.
Christie Pattisson had a big chance to put Waterford in front inside two minutes when Connor Parsons sent in a ball from the left that broke to Padraig Amond, who saw his shot saved by Ed McGinty, but the winger couldn’t follow up from close range.
After both Ellis Chapman and Simon Power had chances to put the hosts in front, they did get the breakthrough that their early dominance deserved on 18 minutes. Will Fitzgerald sent over a corner that was headed goalwards by Connor Malley, but after his header was saved by Jones, Wilson Waweru blasted the ball to the roof of the net.
In first-half stoppage time, Chapman had a big chance to double the lead when he raced through the centre was again denied by Jones and from the same attack a header from Simon Power was cleared off the line by Darragh Leahy.
After having further early chances to extend their lead in the second-half, Sligo doubled their lead on 72 minutes when Simon Power, the winners’ best player, got on the end of a Fitzgerald delivery to power a header to the back of the net. Waterford offered very little to the party throughout and it was another defeat.
