Wildcats make two new American signings for the season ahead
Action from SETU Wildcats and Killester in the Women's Super League.
SETU Wildcats have their first home game of the 24-25 season when they host Father Matthews of Cork city at the Mercy Sports Hall in Ozanam street. Looking back to last season it's honours even as both sides won their home games. In fact it was Wildcats home form that proved crucial and took them all the way to the Championship Final. Last Saturday both sides were in action where Fr. Matthews crushed Galway by a whopping 40 points at home while Wildcats came out on the wrong side of a physical thriller going down by 4 points (83-79) away to reigning champions Killester in Dublin. Head coach Jillian Hayes was disappointed with the outcome as she felt her side weren't clinical enough when it came to converting scoring opportunities. However she did see enough in the overall performance to leave her confident the STS sponsored Wildcats will be a match for the best as the season progresses. So all roads lead to the Mercy with a 5pm tip off.
Wildcats supporters can look forward to seeing a few new faces this season with two new American signings - Ashia Mc Calla who hit 24 points vs Killester, hails from Maryland while centre Chelsea Mc Cain (14 points) is from New Orleans. Guard, Miriam Rasenberger, Germany is also new to the team and is a physiotherapist working in Waterford City. The some familiar faces like the Hickey sisters made a significant contribution with Kate scoring 11 points and Sarah 23. Team captain Helena Rohan scored 5 points leaving Wildcats 4 short of Killester's winning total of 83. Considering the last time these teams met which was last seasons Championship final where the Dubliners had a comfortable win as Wildcats underperformed, the Waterford outfit can take some positives from their first game of the season. One fine young player missing from the Wildcats squad for this and upcoming seasons is Caitlin Gloeckner who has moved to Belfast to study medicine in Queens University. All at Wildcats wish her the very best in her studies and on the court where she will play for Belfast club Cleveland Rockets in the National League this season.
