As the autumn winds begin to blow, Waterford Harbour Sailing Club is celebrating what has been a spectacular sailing season in 2025, with strong turnouts for all events, thrilling races, and countless social gatherings. The season isn’t over yet, and members are gearing up for the final events of the year.

This year, WHSC has continued its reputation as a hub of sailing excellence, with an array of fleets catering to sailors of all ages and experience levels. From the youngest sailors in the Optimist fleet to the seasoned racers in the RS Elites, and everything in between, the club’s offerings have attracted a diverse group of participants. Laser, 420, Wayfarer, Topper, RIBs, and Cruiser fleets have all been in full swing, contributing to a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere on the water.

Brian Lynch, current Commodore of WHSC, commented that “WHSC relies on its volunteers to make the Club run, and it is currently undergoing a major revitalisation due to the growth of its junior fleet and their participation at events locally, nationally and internationally.

Our senior members who also compete at the highest levels in the sport continue to build the club's profile in the sailing community and to continue to represent Waterford proudly. The club is an Irish Sailing accredited Training School and welcomes new members at all levels.” Some of the highlights of the season include the Optimist Sprint Event, which saw some of the best young sailors in the country battling it out on the water. #The club also hosted the Topper Southerns and the RS Elite Nationals, with strong showings from local sailors. Meanwhile, the annual Club Championships for each fleet kept the competition fierce and friendly, giving both new and experienced sailors the chance to showcase their skills.

Perhaps the most rewarding events of the year have been the Sailing Courses, which saw an impressive 179 youth sailors participate. Over the course of the summer, these budding sailors honed their skills and built lifelong friendships, with many taking part in their first race after completing the course. It's a testament to the club’s commitment to fostering the next generation of sailors.

Some of the sailors who did the sailing course saw themselves representing the club and Ireland in events throughout Ireland & abroad, such as 420 Europeans in Porto, Keil Week in Germany & IOCA, Optimist British Nationals in Weymouth.

But sailing isn’t just about the races; WHSC has been a vibrant social hub throughout the season. Boasting one of the best balconies & views in Dunmore and a stocked Bar, whether it was the lively Dallas V’s Dynasty regatta, the sophisticated Wine Tasting and Whiskey Tasting events, or the laid-back Sunday BBQs and Sailing Club Discos, there’s been no shortage of opportunities for members to unwind and celebrate their love for the sport. We are also immensely proud of hosting the RNLI Coffee Morning in aid of the RNLI in Dunmore East.

And the fun doesn’t stop there! As the season enters its final stretch, the club is preparing for the Optimist Autumn League, which kicks off this weekend, alongside Cruiser Racing each Sunday. Dinghy racing continues every Saturday until the end of September. On October 18th, the eagerly awaited Laying Up Supper will mark the end of the season in true WHSC style.

The 2025 season has truly been one to remember at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club. With its strong community spirit, competitive racing, and a social calendar that keeps everyone engaged, WHSC has solidified its place as one of Ireland’s leading sailing clubs. Here’s to an even brighter future, and to another exciting season in 2026!
