Waterford cyclist Evan Keane has been named the August recipient of the WLR Granville Waterford Sport Award after a remarkable display that saw him crowned Munster Road Race Champion in County Cork.
The Pinergy Orwell Wheelers rider produced one of the most impressive performances of the season in Whitechurch, attacking early and spending more than 80 kilometres riding solo before crossing the finish line to secure the provincial title.
Keane built a significant advantage over the chasing pack and showed tremendous determination throughout the closing stages to fend off all challengers and claim a memorable championship victory.
Adding to the local celebrations, Waterford riders filled all three places on the podium. Patrick O'Loughlin of Panduit Carrick Wheelers secured the silver medal, while Waterford Racing's James Griffin completed the clean sweep by taking bronze.
Keane's success was made all the more remarkable by the length of his breakaway. After forging clear of the field, he maintained his effort over more than 80 kilometres on his own, displaying exceptional endurance, strength and race management to hold off the pursuing riders.
The Munster Road Race Championship victory represents another major milestone for the Waterford cyclist and further underlines his growing reputation within Irish cycling.
His performance in Whitechurch was widely admired, showcasing both the physical and mental resilience required to sustain such a lengthy solo effort and ultimately emerge as champion.
The WLR Granville Waterford Sport Award recognises outstanding sporting achievement across the county, and Keane's Munster championship-winning ride undoubtedly marked him out as one of Waterford's standout performers during the month of August.
His victory also highlighted the strength of cycling within the county, with fellow Waterford riders O'Loughlin and Griffin joining him on the championship podium following an excellent day of racing.
After more than 80 kilometres alone at the head of the race, Evan Keane crossed the line as Munster Road Race Champion, a feat that has now been recognised with the August WLR Granville Waterford Sport Award.
