Two Waterford athletes in Irish team for European Championships

The European Track and Field Championships are in Rome this week from Friday, June 7 to June 12 and two athletes from Waterford Clubs are on the Irish team.

Thomas Barr of Ferrybank AC is selected in three events. The 4 x 400m mixed relay, the 4 x 400m men's relay and the 400m hurdles while Barry Keane of Waterford AC is selected for the 10,000m.

On Day 1 Friday the Mixed Relay final is on in the evening session, on Sunday the heats of the 400 metres hurdles are in the morning session, on Monday the 400 metres hurdles semi-final is on in the morning session, on Tuesday the 4 x 400m men's relay is on in the morning and in the afternoon the men's 400 metres hurdles final is on in the evening, on the final day Wednesday June 12th the men's 4 400 metres relay final is on and the final day also will be the final of the 10,000 metres Very best wishes to Thomas and Barry.

THREE WINNERS AT ALL-IRELAND SCHOOLS 

At the All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships in Tullamore on Friday and Saturday last there were three winners from Waterford schools.

Andrew Scanlon St Declan's Kilmacthomas in the senior javelin, Corey Scanlon in the senior hammer and Cayden Scanlon junior hammer both St Augustine's. Second placings went to Corey Scanlon senior discus, Emmet O'Neill Abbey C.C. senior hammer, Rebecca Walsh St Declan's intermediate discus, St Angela's Girls intermediate relay team, Lily Mae Queally St Augustine's minor long jump, Kate Cullinane Blackwater C.S, minor shot putt and 3rd placings went to Isabelle Gaffney St Augustine's intermediate girls 800 metres.

Ciara Rohan Waterpark junior 1500 metres, Eimear Hayes Árdscoil na Mara, Tramore minor 800 metres and Sophie Beresford St Augustine's junior walk had fourth placings.

TOM JORDAN MEMORIAL RACE 

140 competed in the final race of the Outfield Sports Series, the O'Neills Pharmacy Tom Jordan Memorial 5 miles Road Race in Portlaw on Friday last organised by Carrick on Suir Road Runners. First home in 26 minutes.02 seconds was Pat Fitzgerald Waterford leading from the start, second was Andrew Connick in 26.12 and third was Craig O'Brien in 27.12 both Ferrybank. First lady was Kealey Tideswell Clonmel in 28.25, second was Kate Veale West Waterford in 29.38 and third was Angela McCann Clonmel in 31.23.

JOE GOUGH IN LIMERICK 

On Wednesday last Joe Gough West Waterford AC was back in action in an Imra event in Galbally Co Limerick in a 9.5 km Trail Race. Joe was first over 70 home.

MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIPS 

On Saturday and Sunday next there is a Munster Championship fixture in Castleisland Co Kerry and it’s the Munster Juvenile U12and U13 Championships and the U9 to U11 Team Track and Field Championships. It's expected that many Waterford clubs will participate. Start both days is at 10am.

DROMANA FIVE MILES 

Another race in the West Waterford AC Road Series takes place on Friday next at 7.30pm. It’s the 30th Annual Dungarvan Leader 5 miles from Villierstown to Cappoquin along the picturesque Dromana drive. The winning athlete receives the Michael C. Nagle Memorial Trophy. To enter the race athletes must be over 16 on the evening. Entries online at the moment and late entries on the evening will be at from 6.15pm to 7pm in Villierstown Community Hall.

MUNSTER FIXTURE AT RSC 

On Saturday and Sunday week June 15th and 16th the Munster u14 to 19 Championships ae at the RSC Waterford.

MORE ROAD RACES 

Sunday June 23 - WLRFM Viking Marathon, City Hall Waterford 9am.

Friday June 28 - Ballymacarbry 5 miles 7.30pm.
