The opportunity to be crowned the region’s leading golfer will be available to eighteen golfers next weekend when Tramore Golf Club hosts the inaugural South East Golfer of the Year tournament on Saturday next.

The brainchild of the club’s sponsorship convenor Eddie Jackman, the event will bring together the champion golfers from 18 clubs around the South East to challenge for a bespoke trophy sponsored by House of Waterford.

“I have had this idea for a number of years,” explained Jackman. “And when I mentioned it to the Captain Kieran (Dalton) he was fully behind the idea, so we pressed ahead with the arrangements.” “I wanted to bring together the players who had won their respective golfer of the year events at each of their clubs in 2024,so that we could determine the champion across the region,” he continued.

They reached out to twenty one clubs across the South East and while all were supportive of the event, only eighteen were in a position to participate this year.

“There won’t be any substitutes as I believe that only the winner at each club should get the opportunity to compete in the final,” continued Jackman. “In that way, you do not degrade the event. There’s no runner up or third place, just one outright winner.” For Captain Kieran Dalton, it is a wonderful addition to his calendar during his tenure.

“Oh, it's very, very important,” he ventured. “In our club this year alone, we have 64 members who entered our Golfer of the Year competition. We hold 16 tournaments throughout the summer. The best eight cards, the best eight scores they had out of those tournaments go forward to count towards the Golfer of the Year and then the top thirty qualify for the Master Golfer. Now, with the concept that Eddie and the committee have come up with, we're going to have a regional Master Golfer, I think is a fantastic idea. It really is. And I think it can get bigger, and it will get bigger, especially now we have House of Waterford behind us. It's going to be fantastic.”

The support from House of Waterford is another feather in the cap for the tournament given their association with golf across the world.

“Waterford Crystal have always been synonymous with golf,” explained Jackman. “To have them on board is huge and it’s obviously a great fit. There will be a perpetual trophy that will remain in the club but the winner will receive a replica.” “And this is just the start! Who knows where this can go, “ he enthused.

The event takes place on Saturday August 9th at Tramore Golf Club.
