Tom Breen crowned July winner of Waterford Sports Awards

Tom Breen is the July winner of the Waterford Sports Awards in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.

The 22-year-old competed at the European Surfing Championships in Portugal in July. He came fourth in Europe in the Longboard Championships while he formed part of an Irish team that came third overall in the Eurosurf 2025 behind Spain and Portugal.

Tom is now looking forward to the upcoming National Surfing Championships, where he’ll bid to capture a third successive Irish longboard title. He was delighted when he got the call to say he won the July award.

“I was delighted - I’m really grateful to WLR and the Granville Hotel for the opportunity to showcase sports - especially minority sports and, and just show people that there's more to this country in other sports. We were lucky to be a part of a historic team for Irish surfing and it’s great to see the sport on the up.” Tom is hopeful that longboarding will eventually be on the Olympics agenda - but regardless, he is hopeful of many memorable days ahead on the water.

“I'd love if longboarding ever gets added to the Olympics, which it hopefully will be for 2032 - it would be a big goal of mine to make it there, and then obviously to qualify for the Pro Tour in maybe a year or two’s time. I get to travel the world with my friends and family doing what I love - it’s just great.” Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Awards.

The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel in January 2026, as the overall WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Star of the Year and next entrant to the Waterford Sporting Hall of Fame will be revealed.
