David McGlynn is the October winner of the Waterford Sports Awards in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.

October was the month of a lifetime for David McGlynn as he was the first Irish man home in the Irish Life Dublin Marathon, becoming the first Waterford man to achieve the feat in 32 years.

McGlynn ran a personal best time of 2 hours 10 minutes and 59 seconds and finished sixth in the race overall. The 26-year-old had only made his marathon debut in Dublin a year prior. He was just 1 and a half minutes off the fastest marathon time ever recorded by a Waterford man.

Speaking when accepting the award, McGlynn said: “It’s a real honour to win an award like this in Waterford. Waterford sport has been buzzing recently - especially in October. I was absolutely delighted when I got the call.” Winning the national marathon is something that David always believed he could do, but he was still overwhelmed with emotion at the finish.

“It was a funny one - naturally it's the biggest achievement of my sporting career so far and it's the first time I've really been overcome by emotions during a sporting event like that where my parents were there on the home straight and I'd passed like my friends and my girlfriend out on the course. When it all comes together and you cross the line and you realise that you've won it - it was very emotional. All of that combined made it a very special day”, the 26-year-old reflected.

Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Awards.

The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel in January 2026, as the overall WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Star of the Year and next entrant to the Waterford Sporting Hall of Fame will be revealed.
