Joe Gough is the March winner of the Waterford Sports Awards in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.
Gough won both gold and silver at the World Masters Indoors Championships in Florida - capturing gold in the 800 metres and silver in the 1500 metres.
The West Waterford AC man has now won ten individual world gold medals and has high hopes to add to his haul at European level before 2025 comes to a close.
Speaking when accepting the award, Gough said: “It’s a privilege to get the award. It’s always special to be acknowledged locally. For me, it acknowledges all the people who have helped me in achieving everything - my family, my wife Ailish, my coach Dick Murphy, my training partners Paschal Halley and Paul Savage - and my club West Waterford. All of these people have helped me to attain the success I’ve had. To be awarded at local level is special.”
Joe added: “Florida was special. Over 4,000 athletes from 98 countries around the world. It was a special occasion, we had an Irish team of about 40. I was delighted to win my tenth world gold individual title - I say that quickly, but when you think of all the work that goes into winning ten world gold medals - it is quite an achievement. It is simply down to all of the people that have supported me, the people of Waterford and those I’ve been with throughout the last 35 years of non-stop athletics.”
Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Awards.
The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel in January 2026, as the overall WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Star of the Year and next entrant to the Waterford Sporting Hall of Fame will be revealed.
