Bronze for Joe at the World Masters Championships

Waterford's Joe Gough won a bronze medal at the World Masters Championships held in Gothenburg, Sweden in the past week.

Last week the World Masters Championships were in Gothenburg Sweden and Joe Gough West Waterford AC competed in the 800 metres over 70. On Thursday morning, Joe finished third in his heat in 2. 45.38 and automatically qualified for Saturday afternoons final with first four in each heat going through. In the final it turned out to be a thriller with three athletes including Joe fighting out a ding dong battle up front and in a very close finish there was very little to separate them. In the end Joe finished third in 2.24.90 seconds, The race was won by Warren Schmelzer South Africa in 2.24.49, with Peteris Arents Latvia second in 2.24.60 it was that close but Joe's time was a new Irish Record over 70 the old one was 2.29.87 and Joe's calf muscle which he had problems with for some weeks before the race stood up to the task.

SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 

At the Scottish Under 17 Championships on Saturday last Ellis McHugh ,Ferrybank AC representing Ireland's Development Squad won her heat of the 300 metres hurdles u 17 in seconds and three hours later finished second in the final with a time of 45.28 seconds ,the race was won by Grace Malley Whitemoss AC in 44.44. Ellis is comparatively new to hurdle racing and in the final met a hurdle or two incorrectly but with training can improve this quite readily. 

KATE SECOND IN THURLES 

On August 15 in the Streets of Thurles 5km Road Race Kate Veale West Waterford AC finished second in 18 minutes 27 seconds, the race was won by Dymphna Ryan Dundrum in 17.12 with Sharon Cantwell Moyne Co Tipperary third in 18.44.The men's race was won by Sean Tobin Clonmel in 14.52,Kevin Moore Mullingar was just one second behind in 14.53 and Mossy Bracken Moycarkey /Coolcroe was third in 15.03.

NEUROFIN'S HALF MARATHON 

The Annual Greenway Neurorfin's Half Marathon is on Saturday week at 9am a race along the old Waterford/Dungarvan railway line. The course is one of the flattest routes for a half marathon in the country with a net elevation of 100 metres. This scenic point to point race starts at the Coach House in Kilmacthomas and finishes near Ballinroad, Dungarvan. The event is hosted by West Waterford Athletic Club. The Race HQ is the Ballinroad Hall/Soccer Club. Entrants will be transported by bus to the start line in Kilmacthomas. Entries are closed long ago.

COLM RYAN MEMORIAL RUN 

Touraneena Runners in association with West Waterford Athletic Club are hosting a Memorial run in memory of the late Colm Ryan on Sunday, September 15, starting at 11 am in Touraneena. Colm was a champion of the Irish Cancer Society and raised substantial monies for this worthy cause before his untimely passing in April 2023.This 5 k run/walk in his memory will continue this great work with all proceeds from the event donated to the society. COUNTY BOARD MEETING 

At the County Board Meeting in St Augustine's College on Wednesday August 14 Cross Country Dates and Venues were agreed as follows and some other items covered also. Cross Country Dates. Sunday, September 21 Tramore Open u 9, 11, 13, 15 at the Lake, Sunday, September 29 - County Day 1 u10, 12, 14, 16, 18, junior, senior , St Augustine’s College at 11am , €5 per athlete for competition number. Sunday October 6th County Day 2 u9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, Novice, Tramore Racecourse at 11am, €5 per athlete for competition number. Sunday, October 13, County Juvenile Relays u 9 to 16 every age and over 16 to u19, mixed relays 4 X 500m with two boys and two girls athletes compete in own age group only St Augustine’s College at 11am. County B and Masters date and venue to be fixed at next meeting September 4 SETU Arena, Munster Cross Country Fixture for Waterford Sunday, November 3, at Tramore Racecourse -U23/Senior/Juvenile Uneven Age Championships.

COACHING DEVELOPMENT

Agreed to establish 3 sub-groups tasked with developing coaching for County squads indifferent areas . WhatsApp group can be created for interested groups. Senior Endurance - Lead Tom Leahy / James Veale, Juvenile Endurance / XC - Lead Des Colbert /Ravis Zakis Session 1 Sunday, September 1, in Carriganore at 11am. Session 2 Saturday, September 14, in Colligan Woods at 11am.

ATHLETICS IRELAND EGM

Athletics Ireland EGM will take place on Saturday, September 21, in Crowne Plaza, Santry. Brid Golden gave a summary of the proposals and Waterford will be required to send delegates. Delegates can be agreed at the next meeting, Brid to circulate details of the new proposal. Motions will be circulated to County Boards on August 21. To be discussed at next County Board meeting in SETU on Wednesday, September 4.
