Brid Golden elected President of Athletics Ireland

Waterford Delegates at Athletics Ireland Congress that saw Brid Golden elected President are: Fintan Kenny Waterford AC,Shane Scanlon County Chair , Michael Gregan Tramore, Brid Golden Athletics Ireland President, David Murphy Waterford AC and Nora Storey County Secretary.

Saturday, last April 26th, was a historic Day for Waterford athletics in Tullamore at the National Congress of Athletics Ireland when Brid Golden, Ferrybank AC, was elected President of Athletics Ireland unopposed.

With over 45 years involved with athletics first, as a top-class athlete, then a Coach and member of Athletics Ireland High Performance Committee and the driving force behind Ferrybank AC. We wish her well in the role and no doubt will take it in her stride as usual. Also at the Congress, David Murphy, Waterford AC, was re-elected to the Juvenile Committee, while his clubmate, Fintan Kenny, lost out narrowly for a place on the Senior Committee.

BOSTON MARATHON 

Barry Keane Waterford AC made his Marathon debut in the Boston Marathon recently and clocked 2 hrs 23 minutes 44 seconds and finished 81st out of 28,818 runners and Siobhan Heylin from the same club also competed and ran 3:23:04. Adele Walsh St Senan's AC finished second in her age group 50 to 54 in 2 .56.03 behind the legendary Paula Radcliffe Great Britain who was first in 2.53.46. Radcliffe, at 51 years old, was running her last ever Marathon. David McGlynn, Waterford AC, on Sunday last ran in the Hamburg Marathon and after passing through the halfway mark in around 65 minutes, retired late in the race.

THIRD FOR VEALE 

Congratulations to Kate Veale, West Waterford AC, who was third in the Slovak National Race Walking Championship in Borsky. The race was won by Martinez Valeria, Mexico in 46.10, Lara Skorbic Croatia, was second in 47.43, and Kate third in 49.35.

SPLASHWORD RACE 

Around 270 in total competed in the two races in Tramore on Friday evening last, promoted by Tramore AC. First home in the 10 km was Pat Fitzgerald of Waterford AC in 32 25, second was Dermot Twomey (Ind) in 32.54 and third was Conor Kavanagh Waterford AC in 33.51 First lady was Grainne Brennan Carrick on Suir in 39.46, Orna Murray Ferrybank was 2nd in 40.10 and Lindsay Keating (Ind) was third in 41.57 In the 5 km first home was Stuart Moloney Moore Abbey Milers Cork in 16.54,2nd was T.J. Flanagan in 17.17 and Andrew Buck was third in 17.58 both Waterford AC. First lady home was Mary Keane Dundrum Tipperary in 20.30.2nd was Anna Brett Tramore in 21.08, and 3rd was Neasa Moloney( Ind)in 21.22.Thanks to the Gardai, Order of Malta and all the stewards around the course for a well-run event..

TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS 

On Sunday last, the County Track and Field Championships Day 1 took place at the RSC and all the clubs in the County got among the medals, Ferrybank, Waterford, St Mary's Ballygunner, Finisk Valley, KCK, Blackwater, and Ardmore. Thanks to all the stewards present at Track and Field events and Tom O'Brien for doing the results, which are now with each club, Order of Malta and Keith and staff at the RSC. Please note mobile phone was handed in during the day, and the staff at RSC have it there, just give them a description of it.

ST SENAN’S SPORTS 

There were lots of winners from Waterford clubs at the Annual St Senan’s AC Sports in Kilmacow on Easter Monday. These came from Finisk Valley, Ferrybank, Waterford, West Waterford , Tramore, KCK, St Mary's Ballygunner and Ardmore. Ferrybank AC were 2nd and in the Best Juvenile Club Award behind St Abbans, Laois the winners, with St Senan's third.

AWARD FOR JOE 

Heartiest congratulations to Joe Gough, West Waterford AC, who was chosen as the March recipient of the Waterford Sports monthly award winner in association with WLR FM and The Granville Hotel on Thursday, April 10th. Joe received the award in recognition of his two medal achievements, gold and silver at the World Masters Indoors Championships in Florida, when winning gold in the 800 metres and silver in the 1500 metres. Joe now is the now the proud owner of no less than ten individual world gold medals in various age groups Included with joe at the reception were his wife Ailish his training partners Paschal Halley and Paul Savage and the County PRO Fintan Walsh as well as the judges the presentation to him was made by Philip Erskine, Granville Hotel and Neill Gough WLRFM.

SCHOOL FIXTURE 

On Wednesday of this week, April 30th, the East Munster Secondary Schools Girls Track and Field Championships are in Templemore at 11am. Lots of athletes from schools all over the city and county will compete there in four grades: minor, junior, intermediate and senior.

Thursday, May 8th East Munster Boys Track and Field Championships at R.S.C. at 11am. May 11th, Day 2 County Championships RSC at 11am, Saturday, May 17th Munster Schools Championships MTU Cork at 9.30 am, Friday and Saturday, May 30th and June 1st, the All-Ireland Schools Championships Tullamore. The next County Waterford Squad training day will be held on Saturday next May 3rd.at R.S.C. between 11 am and 1 pm, for athletes U12 upwards. If all clubs could let the County Board Secretary know what coaches they would have available, we can then determine what events we might be able to offer on the day.

IRISH TEAMS ANNOUNCED 

Athletics Ireland has announced a 14-strong team ahead of the upcoming World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China on Saturday, May 10th and Sunday, May 11th.Going are Women’s and Men’s 4 x 400 metres teams and mixed 4x400m relay teams aiming to seal all-important qualification for September’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan. The top fourteen teams in each event qualify for the World Championships. It would appear that if the strongest Mixed Relay team that can be put out will have the best chance of a medal, but this may not happen over the two very short days.
