JJ KAVANAGH & SONS CO. SENIOR FOOTBALL FINAL PREVIEW - RATHGORMACK MANAGER KENNY HASSETT

Rathgormack crushed Comeragh rivals The Nire by eleven points last Sunday but there was no silverware handed out. Manager Kenny Hassett knows that the challenge for his team is to reach those levels again on county final day.

“Every team has a set way of playing and it just seemed to click for us. Shots that we took, went over. We shot from good positions, which helps. To trick is to reproduce a performance like that next week. It’s great to be in a final but, once we’re in it, we have to reproduce a performance like that again.”

The Conway Cup holders have won their four championship matches by a total of 49 points. The lay-off after the group stages benefited the squad. “The three weeks did help. It gave a chance for a few knocks and niggles to come right. We gave them a small break as well, which was needed. You see bits and pieces but you don’t always see a performance that good. We have to repeat it again next week. Once is no good.”

Peter Walsh’s prowess under the high ball gave Rathgormack a strong platform to attack. The midfield giant is emerging as a crucial player for the green and red. “Peter has been in and around the panel the last number of years. He has a big frame and has good judgement as well. His football has come on leaps and bounds. Like everyone else, he puts his head down and works hard. He is reaping the benefits of it.”

Billy Power flew back from Dubai last Friday night and donned the number 26 shirt. “It’s great to have him back. He’s a super player, be it hurling or football. Whether we’ll have him next week or not, I don’t know. Sundays don’t tend to suit, we were lucky to get him for this one. Hopefully, we’ll have him for next week.” Did it take much persuasion to coax him home? “No, Billy loves it. When I speak to him on the phone, he knows more about the championship than I do! He’s talking to lads, he’s in the WhatsApp group the whole time. It didn’t take any persuasion.”

The way the semi-final ended gives Hassett and company a stick to beat the team with this week. “There’s always something to work on. I wouldn’t be happy with the two late goals. Our game management at the end wasn’t great either. I know we were a good bit ahead but still, I’d rather we managed the game better than what we did. If we were

slicker up front, we could have got a few more scores. Look, that’s good too. We’ll put our heads down and work on that during the week.”
