AIB Munster Junior Club Football Championship

Shamrocks (Waterford) 0-5

Buttevant (Cork) 3-21

A perfect run of results for the different Waterford sides taking part in this year’s Munster Club Championships came to an end at Fraher Field on Saturday last when Waterford’s Junior Football champions Shamrocks proved no match for a very strong Buttevant side who ran out comfortable winners with 25 points to spare.

The visiting side were always in control in this game. Playing against the wind in the first half which often can dictate proceedings at the Dungarvan venue, the Cork champions turned around with a ten-point advantage showing on the scoreboard.

They set out their intentions from the off finding the net after just three minutes as David Hanlon did a lot of the spadework to set up his brother Conor who finished to the net from close range.

Aaron Horgan followed up with a point for the visitors before Billy Hynes hit a two-point effort for the Knockanore based outfit.

The visitors tagged on half a dozen further scores to go 1-7 to 0-2 in front midway through the half, and while scoring was hard found in the second quarter, the Cork champions did enough to go in at the break leading 1-10 to 0-3.

With the wind at their backs in the second half, Buttevant made the conditions work in their favour as Conor Hanlon put over three points before they added a second goal on 36 minutes.

This time David Hanlon went from score provider to score getter as he finished into the net to give his side a 2-13 to 0-3 advantage.

Orange flags for Michael O’Neill and David Hanlon followed which helped extended the visitors lead to a massive 20 points (2-17 to 0-3).

The visitors third goal came on 42 minutes when David Hanlon finished for his second major of the game, putting his side 22 points in front.

As in the first half, scoring in the second 15 minutes dried up, but the Cork champions won’t be worrying about that stat for now.
