Bitterly disappointed at losing last year’s final to Ardmore Kilrossanty made no mistake on this occasion as they romped to a decisive twelve point win over Abeyside’s second string in Fraher Field on Friday last. With county senior Padraig Fitzgerald back in action following his break in the U.S. the Comeragh side had the firepower to see off The Burgery men as they took a grip on the proceedings from early in the game.
Padraig Fitzgerald opened the scoring from a free seconds after the start and though Brian O’Callaghan hit back in kind almost immediately Kilrossanty took control with Fitzgerald, Jack Power, Pa Cunningham and Alan Dunwoody getting on the score sheet with Cathal Sweeney, Diarmuid Mackle, Cian O’Riordan and Patrick Hurney replying for Abbeyside. Kilrossanty pulled clear in the 26th minute with Eoin Power getting through for a goal that helped his side to a 1-12 to 0-8 halftime lead.
The introduction of Darragh Walsh saw the player account for all six of Abbeyside’s second half points but it was not enough to close the gap on a Kilrossanty side with Padraig Fitzgerald sending over the frees and the victory was virtually sealed when Martin Dunne finished to the net following great work by Alan Dunwoody in the 52nd minute. After that there was no way back for Abbeyside despite the best efforts of Darragh Walsh, Cathal Sweeney and Patrick Hurney.
Padraig Fitzgerald 0-11 (9Fs), Martin Dunne 1-1, Jack Power and Alan Dunwoody 0-3 each, Eoin Power 1-0, Pa Cunningham 0-2.
Darragh Walsh 0-6 (5Fs), Cathal Sweeney 0-3, Brian O’Callaghan 0-2 (Fs),Cian O’Riordan, Patrick Hurney and Diarmuid Mackle 0-1 each.
