Footballers face Longford in final Tailteann cup game

When these sides met in their Division 4 league clash at Ballygunner earlier this year the visitors were fortunate enough to come away with a three point win despite finishing the game with fourteen players. While Waterford went on to win three further league games, most notably one against promotion bound Leitrim Waterford failed to win even one league game.
With three Division 4 teams up against Kildare in their Tailteann Cup group the door was open for one of the three to qualify for the knockout stages but Leitrim’s win over Waterford and one point win over Longford sees the Connacht side into the playoffs ahead of their game against Kildare this coming weekend leaving Waterford and Longford with nothing to play for in Portlaoise on Saturday.
It will be interesting to see just how both sides have evolved since their league meeting ahead of meeting again in next year’s league.
Paul Shankey may take the opportunity to give game time to those who have spent time on the bench throughout the league and championship with an eye to next year while Longford will be keen to put down a marker concerning their potential promotion credentials with a win over one of their rivals. It has all the makings of an interesting challenge game.
