JJ Kavanagh & Sons County Senior Hurling Championship Relegation Final

Clonea 1-21

Dungarvan 3-16

Dungarvan's 16-year stay in the Waterford senior hurling ranks came to an end at Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field on Friday evening as Clonea secured their top-flight status with a dramatic one-point victory in the JJ Kavanagh & Sons County Senior Hurling Championship relegation final.

While some observers believed Dungarvan had already been relegated after finishing bottom of their group, the championship regulations handed the Old Boro a reprieve. Ballygunner B's involvement in the competition meant a relegation play-off was required, giving Dungarvan a final opportunity to preserve their senior status against Clonea, who had finished fifth in the opposite group.

Ultimately, however, Dungarvan were unable to take advantage of that lifeline.

Relegation will be a disappointment for the west Waterford club, but there are reasons for optimism. Throughout the campaign Dungarvan fielded a youthful side, with many players still in their teens or early twenties. Several members of the panel showed significant promise and the move to Premier Intermediate level may provide an opportunity for further development before attempting a return to the senior grade.

For Clonea, survival was the sole objective and they achieved it, though they will know improvements are required if they are to avoid another relegation battle next season. A recurring issue throughout the year was their vulnerability in defence, particularly when conceding goals, and that problem surfaced again as Dungarvan struck three times. Fortunately for the mid-county side, their consistency in front of the posts proved decisive.

Dungarvan made an encouraging start. Donnacha Hayes-Hamilton opened the scoring inside the first minute before Clonea responded through Francis Roche and Kieran Power to edge ahead.

The game's first goal arrived after five minutes. Johnny Burke capitalised on a defensive error, dispossessing a Clonea defender before showing excellent awareness and composure to create space and whip the sliotar to the net.

Clonea replied through Roche and James Power to draw level, but Dungarvan regained the initiative when Billy Hickey pointed, only for Billy Power to answer immediately at the other end.

A second Dungarvan goal arrived on 12 minutes following an excellent team move. Luke Power's delivery into the corner found Pierce Quann, who supplied Johnny Burke. Rather than shoot himself, Burke picked out Ryan McGovern, who finished confidently past Paudie Hunt to leave Dungarvan 2-2 to 0-5 in front.

Clonea responded well. Roche converted two frees before McGovern and Ger Hahessy exchanged scores. Dungarvan then enjoyed another strong spell, with Hayes-Hamilton, Burke and McGovern all finding the target to move five points clear after 22 minutes.

The momentum began to shift before the interval. James Power and Michael Curry reduced the deficit before Mikey Kiely added a point for Dungarvan.

The crucial moment of the half arrived shortly afterwards. Clonea punished Dungarvan for attempting to play their way out of defence, with Gearoid Power breaking up the move. James Power's initial effort was saved, but the rebound fell kindly for Stephen Curry, who tapped home from close range to level the contest.

The goal transformed the game. With confidence growing, Clonea finished the half strongly and late points from Gearoid Power and Kieran Power helped them establish a 1-13 to 2-8 lead at the break.

Dungarvan responded positively after the restart. Points from Luke Power and McGovern quickly restored parity, but Clonea again found answers through Gearoid Power and Stephen Curry.

The sides continued to trade scores. Brian Curran and Roche exchanged points before Dungarvan came agonisingly close to another goal, only for Mikey Kiely's effort to fly narrowly over the crossbar.

An Eddie Burke free levelled matters once more, but crucial scores from James Power and Roche nudged Clonea back in front. Kiely and Roche then swapped points before Johnny Burke reduced the gap to the minimum with six minutes remaining.

The game was ultimately decided by the impact of the Clonea bench. Introduced in the closing stages, substitutes Conor Dalton and David Flynn made immediate contributions.

Dalton fired over a valuable point before Flynn struck the decisive score. Mairtin Power initiated the move, finding Roche, whose long delivery into the corner was gathered by James Power. Spotting Flynn in space, Power supplied the pass and the substitute made no mistake, finishing expertly to the net.

James Power added another point to extend the lead, though Dungarvan continued to battle until the final whistle.

Deep in stoppage time, Willie Hahessy received a second yellow card after bringing down Patrick Curran. The resulting free eventually led to a Dungarvan goal when Eddie Burke blasted to the net, but it proved only a late consolation score as Clonea held on for a dramatic victory.

The final whistle sparked relief for Clonea, whose senior status remains intact for another season. For Dungarvan, meanwhile, the defeat marks the end of a 16-year run in the senior championship, though the emergence of several talented young players offers hope that their stay in the second tier may be a short one.
