This was always expected to be a close fought game and so it was in Fraher Field on Saturday last with Clashmore maintaining their unbeaten run but losing out on top seeding to Brickey Rangers on score difference.
There was nothing between the teams in a well contested first half with Clashmore taking an early lead of 1-3 to 0-3 thanks to a well taken 10th minute goal by Josh Fitzgerald. Points from Shane O’Rourke, Eoghan Murray and David Cahillane had the sides level before Killian O’Sullivan caught and kicked an Andy Molumby delivery to the Clashmore net in the 22nd minute. Further points were traded before late scores from Tadhg De Burca and Danny O’Mahony give their side a 1-9 to 1-7 halftime lead.
Clashmore moved further ahead on the resumption with Brian O’Halloran setting Josh Fitzgerald up for his second goal. The sides continued to trade points as Clashmore moved into a six point lead at 2-13 to 1-10 going into the final quarter. The introduction of Gavin Fives lifted his side and points from Tim Looby and Niall Fives cut the deficit as Ed Donovan was called on to perform heroics in the Clashmore goal. Clashmore retained their three point advantage before points from De Burca, Josh Fitzgerald and Shane Coughan gave their side a six point lead going into added time. In the final minute of added time Cappoquin/Tourin were awarded a penalty and Eoghan Murray duly crashed the ball to the net with a three point margin a fair reflection of how the game played out.
