Darragh's Soapbox: Would you pay 15 cents for a paper bag in Penney's?

Shaun McCarthy Donnolly: 'Paying for bags is going to happen everywhere at some stage'
Penney's stores across Ireland have introduced a charge on paper bags, in an effort to decrease the use of single-use bags.
A spokesperson from the fashion retailer said: “Across our business we use thousands of paper bags every day.
"While our paper bags are made from 100% recycled and recyclable materials, we’re always looking for ways to cut down on single-use waste.
"From May 12, 2025, we’ll be introducing a 15c charge on all paper bags, whether small, medium, or large.
"Research shows that introducing bag charges reduces the number of new bags customers use. It’s a simple step that encourages all of us to think twice about our use.“
We asked locals in Waterford this week how they feel about the change.

said: “We paid for bags today when we were in Penney's. I wouldn’t mind paying for a material bag because I know that costs money to make, but a paper bag I don’t really like paying money for. Also Penney’s paper bags are very bad quality, especially when it’s raining.”
added: “I would pay for it. Paying for bags is going to happen everywhere at some stage, it's just inevitable. Everything has a fee now. But I'm glad that all the different bag sizes will be the same price in Penney's."
Penney’s have advised shoppers to bring their own bags to avoid the charge.
A spokesperson said: “Re-purposing a shopping bag is a more sustainable (and cost-effective) option. Have a dig through your cupboards or car boot, chances are you’ve already got one ready to go.”

Waterford local
said this is exactly what she will be doing.“I went into Penney's today and I brought my own bag with me. I don’t want to contribute by buying a bag there because these companies are already making a lot of money and I feel it's easier to just bring my own bag.”
