Darragh's Soapbox: Waterford delivers resounding no to McGregor presidential bid

Former MMA star Conor McGregor announced recently his intentions to run for the Irish presidency - the election is expected to take place this November.
A survey conducted by Sky News found that not one of the 134 Irish politicians who replied would support the former MMA star's presidential ambitions.
Comments on the survey ranged from "not a hope in hell" to "I would genuinely rather we didn’t have a president at all".
One unnamed senator said McGregor was "a cheerleader for misogyny", whilst an unnamed TD called him a "thug".
TD for the Wicklow-Wexford constituency, Malcolm Byrne, said in the survey: "There is no evidence Mr McGregor has the necessary skillset for the role."
Louth TD Erin McGreehan, said: "As a mother of four young boys I have far more ambition for them than to have someone like that in a position of respectability."
In Waterford this week, the sentiment was shared.
One local said: "I don't think anyone would vote for him," whilst another commented, "I think fame and money is showing his true colours."

Local
said: "I don’t think it’s good and I definitely wouldn’t want him to be president. I don’t think he will be though. I think the few people who would vote for him would be very young."
added: “I think he misses the limelight from when he was a fighter, so running for president gets him back into the papers and the cameras in front of him.
“He’ll never ever be president, and I think he knows he hasn’t a hope at getting in, he's only doing it to keep him in the spotlight."
Frankie added: “He was great when he was fighting. He was over in America making a name and coming out with a Tricolour draped around him, but when he gave up the fighting he fell from grace and ruined it all.”
