A West Waterford councillor has hit out at Uisce Éireann as the area of Monamon is left without water for a week.
In a statement today, Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy said the outage began last Wednesday, August 20, and there is no clear timeframe for restoration.
“It should not be the case that in 2025, families in Cappoquin, Lismore, and right across West Waterford are left without water for a week.
“This is not just an inconvenience — it’s a disgrace. Rural communities are being failed time and time again, and it has to stop,” said Cllr Mulcahy.
The councillor said the outage was not listed on the Uisce Éireann website.
A burst water main dated August 25-26 is listed for the Glenribbeen area, including Monamon, but it is unclear if this is cause of the week-long outage.
Those repair works were due to be completed by 5pm today, August 26.
In his statement, Cllr Mulchay cited one resident as saying: “People are left in the dark. We don’t know what the issue is, when it will be fixed, or why we’re not being kept informed.”
Cllr. Mulcahy has also called for a water tanker to be put on standby in situation.
The councillor warned that what is happening in Monamon is part of a wider pattern.
Across rural communities, he said Uisce Éireann is consistently “failing to communicate, to plan, and to treat people with basic respect.”
“By tomorrow, it will be one full week that people in this area have been left without water.
“Families, children, vulnerable people, and animals are all affected. This is simply not good enough.
"Communities deserve respect, information, and action.
"Leaving households without supply and without communication is unacceptable,” said Cllr Mulcahy.
