At the December sitting of the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council, it was announced that funding has been made available to build public toilets at Clonea beach and in Dungarvan, near the courthouse.

Councillor Thomas Phelan first raised the issue.

He said: “After many years of lobbying on this issue, I was delighted to see that the provision was made for public toilets in Clonea and Dungarvan.”

He asked if the Council had decided whether the public toilets in Dungarvan would be “a fully fledged changing facility”.

He also asked if the Clonea toilets and changing facility will be upgraded to be suitable for children and adults with disabilities.

Director of Roads, Gabriel Hynes, said: “Consideration has been given to using the active travel facility," and explained that it was expected that they would provide a changing space for people with disabilities.

"We’ll be hoping to commence all that in January

“The intention is that they will be open all year round. There’s some upgrade works due on the castle end, it would be our intention in Q1 of next year to get those works done.

“We will commence the re-opening of the toilets in Easter."

Mr Hynes added that he would “have a look” at the changing spaces in Clonea to see if there would be “room” for a changing facility.
