West Waterford councillor says lack of funding is "unacceptable."

Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy has said West Waterford's roads are being left behind.

This comes as Waterford's Local Improvement Scheme allocation is confirmed lower than last year.

Minister Dara Calleary this week announced the funding which included the news that Waterford is to receive €1,037,260, compared to €1.183 million in 2024.

“While any investment in our rural roads is welcome, the fact that Waterford is receiving less than last year is a concern.

“Our local authority is doing its best, but they’re being asked to maintain roads on a shoestring budget. The lack of funding from the central government is unacceptable.

“We all pay our road tax, yet we’re driving on surfaces that aren’t fit for purpose," said Cllr Mulcahy.

Cllr Mulcahy said problems are widespread across West Waterford, but highlighted specifically the N72 through Lismore and the Tallow–Fermoy.

"Only last Friday, another driver burst a tyre on a pothole — it could easily have been worse,” said Cllr Mulcahy.

Cllr Mulcahy urged the public to report problem areas so they can be logged with the council.

He committed to following up on every report.
