Waterford TD says space must be given for full consideration of new airport funding

A Waterford TD has said decision makers must be given the space to consider the new funding proposal for the airport.

Conor McGuinness told the Waterford News and Star that, as the full details of the proposal have not yet been released to the public, it would be “premature” to give a full comment.

But he did say there is a huge amount of frustration at the lack of action by the Government.

“There is also huge frustration in Waterford and right across the South East at the Government’s failure to progress this project to date, or even to make a clear decision on its future.

“My priority is clear: Waterford needs a functioning airport with a runway capable of accommodating jet aircraft. 

"That is the real game changer for the South East — unlocking connectivity, investment, and tourism potential on the scale our region deserves.

“It is now important that those directly involved are given the space to work through the processes, conduct proper due diligence, and ensure that any arrangement is robust, transparent, and in the best interests of the community and the region,” said Deputy McGunniess.

The Sinn Féin TD was referencing the years of work done to secure state funding to progress the extending of the runway.

Following a meeting in July, the airport was preparing another preliminary business case for consideration by the Department of Transport.

If the €30million package in question is accepted, state funding would no longer be needed.

Deputies McGuinness and David Cullinane organised a protest in July to demand the Government make a decision.

Both TDs have continued to raise the issue in the Dáil dozens of times over the past year.
