County Waterford was represented at the recent, 103rd commemoration of Michael Collins' death at Béal na Bláth.

Cllr Liam Brazil, was among those in attendance at the event that was also attended by Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD.

The event took place o Sunday, August 24, and in her wide-ranging address titled, 'Thinking - in Long Strides', a reference to a phrase Collins reportedly used about himself, Minister MacNeill focused on what the next ambition is for the country - having built the walls of a successful and resilient state.

She spoke of energy, security and ensuring, enduring soveign wealth. 

Those in attendance had their attention drawn towards the development of solar and wind energy and referencing those who would be opposed to such measures she said: "I say no, please think in long strides."

She said such developments were not short-term issues and that energy security was integral to our sovereignty. Minister MacNeill also said she believed in the Future Ireland Fund and that it had the potential to allow the State build enduring sovereign wealth and to avoid the "boom-bust cycles" of the past, but only if "we have the political discipline to leave it alone".
