Waterford man found with drugs told gardaí he was 'trying to make a bit of extra cash'
The man appeared at Waterford Courthouse.
A man found with cocaine told gardaí that he was “trying to make a bit of extra cash,” Waterford District Court heard.
Dylan McCormack (26) of 20 Cul Rua, Brown Street, Portlaw, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a controlled drug, cocaine and cannabis, one count of possession with the intention to sell or supply and possession of a knife, on November 27, 2024.
Sergeant John Phelan told the court that while on patrol at Waterside, gardaí observed the defendant driving and formed the opinion he was acting suspiciously.
Gardai stopped and searched the vehicle.
They found €1,946 worth of cocaine in a bag, €20 worth of cannabis in the driver's seat door and a knife.
In response, the defendant told gardaí, “Yes, it's coke, I was trying to make a bit of cash.” The court was told that the defendant had four previous convictions and was currently serving a sentence for a separate matter.
Acting for the defendant, Ken Cunningham told the court that the search was not targeted and that nothing had been found when Mr McCormack’s home had been searched.
He said his client has been in custody since October and asked that the judge “not interfere with his release date.”
Judge John Cheatle sentenced the defendant to six-months in prison, but backdated it to when he went into custody.
This means he has already served out the sentence.
