Waterford man died month after varicose vein surgery

The man was brought to UHW.
A man in his early 30's passed away one month after receiving varicose vein surgery.
The man's family attended the inquest over his death at Waterford Courthouse, which was presided over by County Coroner John P. Goff.
The inquest heard how in late 2024 the man collapsed at home and was brought to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at University Hospital Waterford (UHW).
Consultant Pathologist at UHW Dr Mutaz Nur told the inquest that the cause of death was a pulmonary embolism.
He has underwent surgery as a day patient for varicose vein removal surgery, under the care of Consultant Vascular Surgeon Dr Nawar Masarani.
The doctor gave an account of the man's care and that he signed a consent form recognising the risks of such a surgery, one of them being a pulmonary embolism. He went on to detail the surgery that was carried out on the man's lower limb.
It was heard that the patient was put under general anaesthetic and was transferred to a day ward with "no issues".
After the surgery, Dr Masarani told the inquest that he informed the patient about staying hydrated, removing bandages after 48 hours, keeping mobility and wearing compression socks.
The Sunday before his death, the man attended his GP. Mr Goff stated: "That is an issue to be addressed, but not by me."
The man's family were in attendance at the hearing, accompanied by a legal representative.
Mr Goff later said: "The reason why I haven't called the GP is because cause of death was listed as a risk factor in the procedure. It is very sad, a young man."
He went on to give his sincere condolences to the family, as did Dr Nur and Dr Masarani.
