A Ferrybank man was caught driving three months after being disqualified.

Damien Aylward (51) of 1 Lime Grove, Oatridge, Ferrybank, was before Judge John Cheatle at Waterford District Court for driving without a licence and without insurance at Ballinamona, Old Tramore Road on January 22, 2026.

The court heard that gardaí operating a checkpoint detected the defendant travelling at 82km/h in a 60km zone.

They stopped and spoke to the defendant and discovered he was disqualified from driving.

The court was told that the defendant had two previous convictions, for drink driving and driving while holding a mobile phone.

Acting for the defendant, solicitor Ken Cunningham said that his client had been caught driving in a work vehicle, which was insured, three months after he received the disqualification.

But he asked Judge Cheatle not to extend that disqualification.

Judge Cheatle said that the offence “was a bit more serious than a missed direct debit”.

He imposed a one-year driving ban and a €400 fine, to be paid within five months.

Funded by the Court Reporting Scheme.
