A 21-year-old Waterford man assaulted his mother and hurled abuse at a Garda, a court has heard.

Kyle Hanrahan, of 103 Farran Park, Waterford City, appeared via video link at Waterford Circuit Court before Judge Eugene O’Kelly. Garda Lorraine O’Dwyer told the court that she arrested Hanrahan at his home on June 24, 2024.

He committed criminal damage by kicking the glass door of the home. He hit his mother on the face with a closed fist, causing her to fall down. Gardaí observed red marks below her eye, cheek and chin. It is understood Hanrahan drank an entire bottle of spirits on the day and was heavily inebriated. He was conveyed to Waterford Garda Station but was unfit for questioning due to intoxication. When later asked about the criminal damage, he told Gardaí: "I can't remember, I probably did it."

'High-risk'

The Court heard that Hanrahan had 37 previous convictions related to theft, assault and public order offences. Defence counsel Gareth Hayden BL said that Hanrahan had remorse for his actions and has struggled with alcohol. His probation report put him at a "high-risk" of reoffending.

Judge O'Kelly imposed a headline sentence of two years and six months for the assault, with the final year suspended for a period of 18 months. Hanrahan was ordered to have "meaningful engagement" with the Probation Service both during and after his imprisonment.
