Ahead of Ireland Reads Day, a national celebration of reading, Waterford City & County Council have signed a contract with PRIMO Coachworks Ltd. for a mobile library for Waterford.

The new mobile library will be popping up in some unusual places according to Waterford City and County Librarian, Mary Conway.

She said, “The mobile library vehicle will act as a pop-up library at festivals such as Towers and Tales and All Together Now. In addition to serving rural communities, the mobile library will be used to visit schools and nursing homes throughout Waterford.”

Ms Conway continued, “There are many areas of Waterford city and county that are not served by a library branch, and this mobile library vehicle will provide much needed access to this valuable public service for the people of Waterford."

The vehicle will be completed and delivered in 2027 for Waterford Libraries.

Speaking at the contract signingThursday, February 26, Mayor Ryan said, “I am delighted, both as Mayor and as a former librarian, to see this important project come to fruition with the signing of this contract.

“The joy that comes from access to books, audiobooks, magazines and historical newspapers, wherever you are across the city and county, cannot be overstated. Access to reading is access to opportunity, imagination and well-being. It is especially fitting that we mark this milestone ahead of Ireland Reads Day on February 28th, a national celebration of reading and the many benefits it brings to our lives.”
