Operation Thor

An Garda Síochána have launched the winter phase of Operation Thor, which is designed to target travelling criminals who carry out burglary and related offences.

According to a Garda spokesperson: "We do see a rise in burglaries during the winter months, it can be up to a 20% increase and this is a good time for residents to carry out a security review of their homes. There is a useful aid on the Garda website to get you started.

"Check your external lights and repair or replace and broken ones. Servicing your house alarms, particularly if you have a non wired version as the batteries may need replacing – this must be carried out by a PSA licensed installer. Also ensuring that the video doorbell batteries are charged and CCTV cameras are unobscured by vegetation or cobwebs.

"Marking your property and recording serial numbers with photographs of the items can greatly assist in the return of stolen property to the rightful owners. Check out the Property App on the App Store or Google Play."

Gardaí are advising the public to take precautions when locking up their homes with their 'lock up light up' campaign. They encourage the public to take the following steps;

• Turn on some lights (LED bulbs are more energy efficient than traditional bulbs)

• Use timer switches/motion detectors

• Lock all doors and windows

• Use a house alarm

• Store keys away from windows

• Don’t keep large amounts of cash or jewellery in the house.
