The Irish Times further reported that the route most at risk is the Dublin to Waterford service.

Reports this week suggest that Waterford Expressway bus routes are under review due to diminishing returns.

Bus Eireann, who operate the Expressway service, are in the process of reviewing a number of their routes nationally, including the Dublin to Waterford route, and the Rosslare to Waterford and Tralee route, The Irish Times reported last week.

It is understood that closing the routes would have a positive financial impact for the company.

Other routes being examined by Bus Eireann include Dublin to Wexford, Limerick to Tralee and Killarney and Galway to Ballina.

The Irish Times further reported that the route most at risk is the Dublin to Waterford service.

Route viability

In a letter sent by Chairman of the CIÉ transport group Aidan Murphy to the Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien in September, details of the reviews were explained.

Mr. Murphy said that there are “significant challenges” for the Expressway business.

“There have been some positive developments to address this, including an agreement with the National Transport Authority to revise the overhead allocation methodology.

“Further discussions are under way regarding route viability to ensure the long-term sustainability of this business,” he added.

Bus Eireann were reached for further comment.
