Waterford Election 2024: 11 questions with Cllr Joe Kelly (Independent)

Cllr Joe Kelly

Ahead of this weekend’s local elections the Waterford News & Star asked candidates to answer 11 quickfire questions to give the electorate a view of their priorities and what can be expected from them if elected.

Cath lab or airport?

24/7 Cath lab is a must to save lives- but both are vital services for the people of the southeast region and must be delivered urgently by the Government.

Specific problem in your own electoral ward you would like to see addressed?

Build a lot more houses of all types for people – Council houses, private developers, Approved Housing Bodies and so on. Everyone has a big role to play to resolve this housing crisis.

What’s your favorite album or book?

'The Making of a Detective', by retired Senior Garda Investigator Pat Marry. An intriguing insight into how criminal investigations are carried out.

Why did you get into politics?

I have always been interested in current affairs and I’ve volunteered with many organisation’s over the years. Trying to make a difference to people’s lives through politics was a natural next step for me.

What’s your proudest achievement?

There are a few but helping families purchase or rent their own home in extremely difficult circumstances, are the ones that stick out for me.

Potholes or cycle lanes – which would you invest in first?

Repairing roads and potholes are the immediate priority for me. Cycle lanes are a great addition, but only in the right places. We need to be very careful with cycle lanes. They must improve the overall transport piece and not simply create even more problems if they are not located strategically and built properly.

Tea or coffee?

Tea please!

Your favourite blaa filling?

Ham and Cheese

Biggest political influence?

My father without doubt. We spent hours late into the night chatting about trade unions, social issues and how to improve our country. I learned so much from him.

Who makes the most dinners in your house?

My wife Frances. I’d starve without her.

What one thing would you most like to see change in Waterford during your term if elected?

Full 24/7 Cardiac Care at UHW and the reopening of Waterford Airport to international passenger flights. I think both are certainly achievable in the next 5 years.
