Waterford disability centre yields positive inspection results

A local disability centre produced very positive results following an inspection from the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA).
The designated centre at Rathverna in the west of the county, is a detached two-storey house which had five residents on the day of the unannounced inspection.
The designated centre is staffed by social care workers and assistant support workers.
In summary, based on what the residents communicated with the inspector and what was observed, it was evident that the residents received a good quality of care and support.
The residents appeared content and comfortable in their home and the staff team were observed supporting the residents in an appropriate and caring manner.
The staff team were observed treating and speaking with the residents in a dignified and caring manner throughout the inspection.
It was evident that residents were facilitated to exercise choice and control across a range of daily activities and to have their choices and decisions respected.
Weekly meetings took place with residents which consulted with residents around choosing meals and activities.
The inspector noted that were systems in place to safeguard residents.
There was evidence that incidents were appropriately reviewed, managed and responded to. Support plans were in place to manage identified safeguarding concerns.
The residents were observed to appear comfortable in their home and in the presence of the staff team and management.
The centre yielded very positive results, and was marked compliant in every category bar one.
In the premises category, the centre was marked 'substantially compliant', due to water damage and stains on the ceiling in one resident's apartment.
