The polls have officially opened in Waterford and the rest of the country for the Presidential Election 2025 and will be open until 10pm.
Ahead of the polls opening, Councillor Mary Roche offered some advice on social media for those set to or considering casting their vote.
Cllr Roche said in a post on social media that she has been canvasing for a particular candidate, but said she respects everyone's choice.
“As always, my recommendation is to always go 'out and vote'. Many made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could. Democracy isn't perfect, but it's better than the alternatives.
"It's important, nowadays more than ever. Don't take it for granted,” said Cllr Roche.
She said ideally you would have your polling card, but you don’t need it as long as you have ID.
The councillor reminded voters that voting is by way of proportional representation and so you indicate your preference by writing 1, 2 and 3 beside the picture of your preferred candidates.
“I know there are some who feel that spoiling their vote will make a point, and that too is your right and choice, although I don't recommend it as it has absolutely zero impact on the eventual outcome,” said Cllr Roche.
Cllr Roche also said the counting is in SETU Arena from 9am on Saturday and the count centre is open and free to drop by.
!There is a tally (informal count by volunteers who watch as the voting boxes are opened) being organised locally, and if there are enough people taking part, we should have a fair idea of how our constituency has voted before lunchtime, I'd say,” said Cllr Roche.
