Speeding on West Street in Tallow is an ongoing issue for residents.

Waterford City and County Council say they have done all they can to limit speed on West Street in Tallow.

Director of Services for Roads, Gabriel Hynes, told councillors at the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council meeting in September that measures have been put in place, but the rest is up to drivers.

“From a speed point of view, I’m satisfied with what in place that is adequate.

"And, people need to ensure that they are driving within the speed limits. It’s 50km/h. So, it's driver's responsibility to ensure they obey the speed limits,” said Mr Hynes.

Mr Hynes said the carriageway is narrow and cars are parked on the footpaths on either side of the street.

Driver feedback signs have been installed and there is a garda station on the street.

“So we really don’t intend for any more intervention,” said Mr Hynes.

The director was responding to the issue raised by Councillor John Pratt.

Cllr Pratt said residents remain concerned about speed on the street, despite the issue being raised at most monthly council meetings.

The councillor said he acknowledges that the council feels the current measures are sufficient, but people feel more needs to be done to make the street safe.

Cllr Pratt also asked about resurfacing works in Tallow, to which Mr Hynes said would start shortly.

In regard to West Street specifically, Mr Hynes said resurfacing works were not in this year’s budget.

But they would consider them for next year’s road programme.
