Waterford City & County Council have passed a motion calling for Government to increase the education of Irish language to children.
The motion called upon Government to enact legislation to systematically, sustainably, and steadily increase the provision of Irish-medium education so that future generations of Irish children will have the opportunity to be educated through their national language, if they so desire.
Proposing the motion to the Council, councillor John Pratt (Lab), said, “We’ve all been through school and did Irish starting at a primary level. The unfortunate situation is we probably should all be fluent, but that isn’t the case.”
Cllr Thomas Phelan (Lab) added that “the days of teaching fully through Irish seem to be long gone".
“We’re very fortunate locally to have a Gaeltacht on our doorstep, one of the few counties that have it. Waterford is very strong in that regard, so we’d hopefully be building on a very strong base by getting behind this motion” he said.
The motion was passed unanimously.
