A Waterford businessman has been fined €350 for being abusive to staff and the gardaí at Dooley's Hotel.
Anthony Cronin (42), of Apt 20, Glencove Apartments, Dunmore Road, Waterford, appeared before Judge John Cheatle at Waterford District Court charged with threatening and abusive behaviour and intoxication in a public place.
The court heard that on January 2, 2025, gardaí responded to a report of a male behaving aggressively toward staff at Dooley’s Hotel.
When gardaí arrived, Mr Cronin became abusive toward them, telling them to “f**k off”.
The court was told the defendant had 13 previous convictions, including one in the UK for assaulting a police officer.
Acting for the defendant, solicitor Hilary Delahunty said his client is engaged in education and was involved with an award-winning payroll app.
He said he does not have a “devil may care attitude to offending,” but he does have an alcohol problem.
But, he has not been drinking now, for a number of weeks.
“He is terribly embarrassed by this and wants to apologise to gardaí and all those who had to deal with him,” said Mr Delahunty.
Judge Cheatle fined the defendant €350 for the threatening and abusive behaviour offence and took the public intoxication charge into consideration.
