WATCH: Doh! there was only ever going to be one winner of the Homor Simpson competition
A whole lot of Homors and a Marge at ATN.
In order to be crowned as All Together Now’s best Homer Simpson, the 30 or so hopefuls were required to complete a series of challenges at the behest of a yellow-faced, boiler-suit-donned, enthusiastic host, introduced simply as ‘Ben.’
If you thought this was a niche, low-key affair, you couldn’t be more wrong. The crowd was rowdier than those at Kneecap.
The Homers themselves were a diverse crowd.
There were skinny Homer’s and fat one’s, Homer’s with dark circles under their eyes and still more with lightning flash lines etched into the side of their head, there was even a Marge whose tall blue hair teetered precariously, occasionally exposing the Coors light box that was keeping the whole thing together.
The first challenge involved drinking a plastic cup of warm beer and then crushing that cup on the top of your (bald) head.
The contestants fared well and when Ben admitted that he would be choosing who to expel “pretty randomly”, a thunder of boos erupted when the first Homer was asked to leave the stage. With a burb and a wink, he was gone and seven more followed suit.
Round two was even more gruelling. The competition, organised “with absolutely no money” could not afford to buy each Homer a donut so instead the contestants were challenged with eating a stale bagel as quickly as possible.
At this stage, the competition became vicious with just one can of white claw to go around, two Homer’s battled out who could take the last sip securing them a place in the next round.
The final four contestants consisted of three Homer’s and one Marge - a crowd favourite. They were asked to do their best impression of an iconic Homer Simpson line.
One Homer asked another to join him on stage where he re-created the iconic scene where Homer chokes his son.
Another, stood quietly, readied himself for a moment and let out a pitch perfect ‘Doh!’, making the crowd go wild.
After a crowd vote, we were down to our final three - two Homer’s and one Marge. Special guest judge was Ross McCarney, an Irish comedian known for his Homer slippers skits on social media.
When asked by Ben what would make the best Homer he replied: “Well his name would be Homer and he would live in Springfield with his wife Marge and his children Lisa and Bart."
Thereby establishing himself as a tough judge with high expectations.
After the Homer’s and Marge gave their reason why they should be crowd winner, the crowd started murmuring to one another and pointing to the back corner of the packed tent. Ross, confused by the committed crowd’s sudden disinterest in the stage, asked what was happening.
The crowd parted and revealed…another Marge! A chant of “Marge, Marge, Marge” broke out and one rather chivalrous Homer came down from the stage to greet her.
At this point Ben told the crowd that his 'magic mushrooms' were kicking in.
When asked what her name was, Marge responded: “I’m Marge”.
Clearly flabbergasted, Ross asked the crowd who they thought should be crowned winner, and 'Marge two', was the clear victor in the crowd’s eyes.
Her prize? Twelve cans of beer, which she gracefully shared with Homer and the other Marge.
When she’s not Marge, the winner goes by the name of Jocelyn Coughlan and told the Waterford News & Star that winning the competition was “unbelievable”.
She continued that this was “the only thing I’ve ever won in my life.”
